Lessons from the Great American Leaders & How They Apply Now

Where Are All the Leaders When We Need Them?

The focus of this blog is to focus on the reasons behind the failure of leadership since 2007 as American businesses experienced extreme periods of rapid and unpredictable change due to near depression economic conditions.

The headlines are replete with examples of poor or non-existent leadership on multiple levels from Washington to the boardroom.

Corporate training in America invests over $ 50 billion in training each year, a fair share of it on leadership training and development.  When it was needed the managers developed under these programs failed to step up to the plate and lead!

I have developed leadership programs for many large companies, yet once the economy began to fail, one manager told me. “who has time for leadership! We’re just trying to survive!”  I thought that was an odd response.

Just when leadership is needed, it failed. One can logically conclude that the large investment in leadership training has also failed. This has repercussions beyond the mere cost of training in real economic terms and consequences.

I feel this must be explored and if possible addressed to mitigate future financial consequences.

I am researching the issues surrounding this failure to understand how leadership can be properly redefined and how to guide companies to effectively reestablish leadership that will sustain itself when times get tough.

History demonstrates during extreme periods of turmoil, leaders emerge, since many are tried and tested by adversity.

The purpose of this blog is to share my insights and perspectives so to reshape and restore leadership in a meaningful way, not just to examine the reasons, but to offer ways companies can effectively make the changes they need to identify and develop the leaders in their mist.

I don’t have the answers yet, but I am exploring the issues. I’ll keep you posted.
